Comments

Location: Southbound ~low 200 to high 100 block of Laredo Dr. (DeKalb County) Lanes divided by double yellow lines. Oncoming lane line of sight blocked by hill. Cyclists: Myself and wife. As we were cycling uphill, two SUVs (first white, unidentifiable, second red Ford Expedition) passed my wife and I less than 3 feet and without line of sight on oncoming traffic. Red was following white very closely. Due to the crumbling nature, potholes and debris on the right side of the street required our travel in the lane. As we all crested the hill, the motorists squeeze passed us and were almost immediately returning to the original travel lane as oncoming traffic (which they couldn't see on this ill-advised pass) was in the oncoming lane. The lane return was closer than even the three feet minimum and required avoidance and braking on my part. Honestly, yes, the shock and situational closeness led to my expressing negatively. Perhaps the white SUV didn't see me, or just didn't care. The red SUV driver (20-40 something large AA male), however, stopped his vehicle in the middle of his travel lane, got out and started pointing and screaming that I "need to be off the road!" I called back, from a stopped position on the side of the road that he was required to pass safely giving at least three feet distance. My wife attempted to calm him by saying that the negative reaction was for the first driver and not him. He got back in his vehicle and I proceeded down the side of the lane and past him. He gunned the engine and attempted to swipe/run me down. The SUV literally went past me a hands width away. Luck and a steady hand kept me upright and untouched... just barely. I focused on the tag to memorize it. He drove away. We proceeded home on the Stone Mountain Trail.
