Defect Summary KIA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006-2008 RIO VEHICLES, MANUFACTURED FROM FEBRUARY 20, 2005, THROUGH DECEMBER 9, 2007. THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT OCCUPANT SENSOR MAT CAN EXPERIENCE FATIGUE CRACKING. IF SUFFICIENT CRACKING OCCURS, THE OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM (OCS) WILL CEASE TO FUNCTION SUCH THAT THE SYSTEM WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DETECT WHETHER A CHILD PASSENGER IS IN THE SEAT AND THE AIRBAG WILL DEPLOY DURING A CRASH NECESSITATING DEPLOYMENT.

Consequence Summary AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT WITH A CHILD IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE SEAT INCREASES THE RISK OF INJURY TO THAT CHILD.

Corrective Summary KIA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE OCS SEAT SENSOR MAT, FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 26, 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KIA CONSUMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-333-4542.

They parked deep in my yard on a late Monday afteroon in a white car - stocky tanned Hispanic male, thin female. Both had bad tattoos. At the time I had been lazy and allowed mail to pile up in my mailbox and fliers on my front door left for weeks. By all accounts my house looked empty. It's a corner lot with low visibility near the rear entrance. They walked around the side of my yard before finally knocking on my door. I did not answer for a few minutes. (I like to ignore solicitors, Mormons and Jehova's Witnesses in my area). To my surprise they were still sitting in the car well within my yard! I approached their car and they asked if I knew some guy who worked at the "Red Hat who helped them a while back when they were stranded, they forget exactly where his house is". *Red Hat is a software company. *Red Roof Inn is a very well known motel chain. They made no description of the guy, and by all accounts this seemed like a "fishing question" to determine how many people may have lived here. I simply answered "no". They said sorry to bother and drove off. The odd thing is they turned the corner- they did not continue to drive slowly down the block as if they were strill trying to find "their friend's house". Beware. My gut told me they were casing empty houses to rob.
